Find out what books and book series are among the most popular with ILA students
February 28, 2023
While going around the school we have met many fellow students who love to read. While students vary on their preferences as to which is the best book, there was a consensus among those we asked as to what were their favorites. Of the 45 students polled, ranging from third grade to high school, here are just some of the most popular, favorite books at ILA.
One of the most popular books is a series called, Percy Jackson, written by Rick Riordan. The series is about a twelve year old boy named Percy Jackson who is really struggling in school because of his ADHD and Dyslexia. He is also just super weird. After a while of him having a hard time he figures out he is a demigod, son of Poseidon. He finds himself at a camp for demigods just like him and realizes he is a part of a prophecy. Going on adventures with his best friends, Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, he ends up doing incredible things. I have met multiple people who would definitely recommend this fantasy series, along with myself. When we asked one of the students what his favorite book was, he responded, “Percy Jackson, because it’s the only good book these days. It’s just exciting with adventure, and it keeps you reading.”
Harry Potter is another series that people love. The seven book series written by J. K. Rowling has been popular for the past two decades since it was first released. It’s about a boy named Harry Potter who for ten years has had to live under the stairs in a cupboard which is in the house of his Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and their son Dudley, who were very cruel to him. On his 11th birthday Harry got a letter asking him to come to a school called Hogwarts where he can learn magic and wizardry. Harry finds that he is not just a wizard, but a famous one. He becomes friends with two others, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger. His new friends become his closest allies and help him find the truth about his parent’s death.
Another popular book series is The Wingfeather saga. All four of the fantasy books written by Andrew Peterson are loved by four different people. It’s about three children: Janner Igiby, Kalmar Igiby, and Leeli Igiby. Janner is twelve, Kalmar is eleven, and their little sister Leeli is nine. They’re accompanied by Leeli’s dog Nugget, their mother Nia, and their grandfather who used to be a pirate, Podo Helmer. They live in a world called Aerwiar, which is like our world, except they don’t have electricity or gunpowder, and there are all sorts of scary and weird animals, like sea dragons and toothy cows and other weird creatures. Janner, the eldest, is about to discover that the plain small town where they live is anything but normal. In fact, he and his family are at the center of a huge mystery that will change their lives forever.
The Maze Runner series was also popular among readers. James Dashner authored this five-book series about a teenage boy named Thomas who finds himself with no memory except his name. He wakes up in a large dark elevator and once it comes to a stop and the door opens he sees 50 other teenage boys surrounding him. He soon learns that their job is to go into a maze and try to find a way out; almost no one can. On the same day of every month, the dark elevator brings in a new boy to help, but the day after Thomas came, it brings a girl who is in a coma. The thrilling story and exciting plot twists are why some readers claimed this was so popular.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was another series readers preferred. The three book series written by J. R. R. Tolkin are books shaped after the Bible and have many hidden Biblical truths. It’s about a Hobbit named Frodo who learns that there is a ring that has insane power and can make the purest of hearts evil. He has to destroy it. Through his adventures many try to steal the ring from him to gain its power meanwhile Frodo battles the evil himself. His friend Samwise comes with Frodo on this adventure to try to protect him. On the way they gather six more friends, and many are lost on through the journey. This is one we recommend putting on your book bucket list.
Warrior Cats, The Boxcar Children, The Hobbit, and The Chronicles of Narnia are all series that also registered on our poll. Even though many people love to read we also had five people say they don’t read, who ended up just saying the Bible. If you don’t know what to read and want to find a popular book that kids your own age read, you’re sure to find one you’ll like from the favorite books at ILA.
